Your mustangs XC team made their annual trip as a team, this year returning to Portland, Oregon to compete at the Nike Portland XC race. Last year, your boys took 2nd in the sweepstakes race known as the Jim Danner Championship race and the girls took 2nd in the Div. 1 race. This year we added another 6 boys as a B team to compete in another Varsity race as well. This year they left a day early to enjoy what Oregon has to offer.
Athletes got to enjoy the beautiful trail running that is available in Oregon as well as making visits to the University of Portland campus as well as the Nike World HQ located in Beaverton. There the athletes got a tour of the Nike campus as well as being able to do product testing for new products coming out from Nike. They also got to witness Olympian Galen Rupp getting in a workout with world famous coach Alberto Salazar.
The JV boys kicked off the day racing in the Div. 1 Varsity boys race, their race had to be changed due to our returning flight time in the afternoon. This race pitted them against some of the best teams in CA, WA and OR. They place 20th out of 32 teams which is impressive for a JV team in a Varsity race. They were led by Senior Kevin Lopez who finished the course in 17:02 just off his personal best. The biggest personal best on this squad belonged to Adrian Alvarez who dropped 30 seconds off his previous best to run 17:34 and finish 5th for the team.
The Girls Varsity race followed and featured a huge breakout race from junior Kimberly Pena. Kimberly ran a over a full minute faster than last year running a personal best time of 18:54 and finishing 11th in the race. She was followed by Senior Paloma Barron who finished 4 spots behind her in 14th place with a time of 18:56, which was over a 40 second improvement from last year. Rounding out our top 5 for the day was Sophomores Abigale Rippe, Jordan Hernandez, and senior Jasmine Walker. The girls finished in 10th place as a team in a much faster race than last year.
Your Varsity Boys stepped it up a notch with a little motivation from last year finishing 2nd place in the same race. This year they left no doubt and won the Danner Championship race with a score of 68 pts to defeat the defending Oregon State Champions Crater HS (89 pts). The boys placed 4 boys in the top 21 in the race with their 5th scorer coming in 35th place. Compared to last years team our #5 this year would’ve been in front of our #3 from last year in the same race.
The boys were led by Tyler Spencer who had an outstanding individual race, finishing 4th overall. His performance was good enough to have him in a vote for the top performance of the week for an individual on Milesplit.com follow the link here to vote for him:
He was followed by fellow Senior Raymon Ornelas and rounding out the top 5 were Sophomores Raul Chavez, Michael Sahagun and senior Moises Rendon. After their race the boys got to take a picture with Olympic Silver Medalist and American Steeple Chase record holder Evan Jager. The boys not only came home with the first place trophy but also with some Nike Swag in the form of backpacks for their big win. The boys are currently ranked #6 in the Nation and #4 in the state. They will compete again next Wednesday in our BIG VIII Cluster Meet #2 and then again on Saturday where they look to repeat at Riverside County Team Champions.
